Powergen
After three years of claiming that they 'invest more per customer in green energy than any other major supplier in the UK Powergen have finally lived up to their word.
Undoubtedly a great new project, Powergen's new biomass plant at Steven's Croft in southern Scotland should produce enough electricty to power 70,000 homes, and displace the emissions of 140,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year. Impressive stuff.... although the statistics are probably not as impressive as those expected for the new coal-fired power station the company are also planning to build in Kent - that's the first coal-fired power station to be proposed in 24 years.
Greenpeace estimates the Kingsnorth power station will release 8.1 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere each year - that's more than 50 times the amount Steven's Croft will save. Shame they didn't mention that in their 'Wind of Change' TV ad campaign last summer...
